How to choose a newborn photographer

During my time as a newborn photographer in Perth, I’ve LOVED working with some of the most awesome families around.

I’m going to tell you what you need to consider before you pay that photography deposit for your newborn photo shoot.

If you’ve started the search for a photographer then you’ll know just how many options there are. There are literally THOUSANDS of newborn photographers in Perth! Before you go ahead and book a professional photographer for your own newborn photo shoot though, there are a few important things to consider.

What are you looking for?

Newborn photographers have different styles so you need to decide on someone who can help you achieve the end result you are looking for. This applies to everything from wedding and maternity shoots to family and corporate shoots. Have a look at the photographer’s portfolio of work on Instagram, Facebook and their website. Does their style sing to your heart? It’s important to choose someone who’s work you LOVE, especially for newborn photo shoots, as they’re a one-time only, can’t do-over thing.

research

Before you invest in a newborn photographer you need to do your homework. Get online to find a few customer reviews, browse around their website to view their latest work and have a look around their social media pages. These platforms will also give you a good idea of their personality and style. Some other important points to consider when researching photographers are:

1.     Budget. Do their services fall within your price range? It’s important not to “price shop” though! Some things are worth saving up for, and a photographer who’s work you LOVE is one of those things. After all, you’re going to hang your images on your home’s walls for a long time to come. Art that you enjoy looking at every day is WORTH spending a little more on. You could always ask if they can accomodate a payment plan. It's something that I can offer to my clients.

2.     Expertise. Are they experienced enough to give you the results you are looking for? Is their work consistent across their social pages and website? Do you love their work? (Again, it’s about hiring someone who’s work you LOVE!) I seriously enjoy the total buzz that comes from working with families that love my work, “get me” and feel like I’m the right photographer for them. I'm not everyone's cup of tea, and that's totally ok too.

3.     Location. Are they based in your area or are you willing to travel to their area? Most suburbs in Perth are easily accessible. Don’t limit your search to NOR (north of river) or SOR (south of river) when your perfect photographer might be just a little drive away. Travel for someone who’s work you LOVE! I’ve had families drive a couple of hours to my studio, because I was the right fit for them. I know travelling with a new baby can seem daunting, but it will be ok. And it will be worth it. Promise!

create a short list

Once you have done your research, create a short list of newborn photographers that stand out for you. Get in touch with each of them via their website or their social pages and ask any questions that you might have. Does their response give you good vibes?

It’s important that you choose a newborn photographer that you have confidence in and who’s work you LOVE. Your baby’s photos are there to last you a lifetime, so choose a photographer who can deliver images of your baby and family that you’re going to LOVE looking at every day of your life.

I look forward to welcoming you and your family with your newborn baby to my studio in Darlington, WA!
